that refurbished toshiba would be my pick if you're leaning towards a laptop.
I'd side with the Acer's over the HP's generally out of personal preference but both come with a lot of extra bloatware and are not stocked with the best components under the hood. That said a laptop hard is likely to be slower than the stupidly slow hard drive on a cheap Acer or HP.

I vote for the toshiba + upgrade to a faster hard drive is the hard drive included is under 7200 rpm's. Don't go with an ssd if you need lots of space or are going to run windows xp on it.

Thanks for the help. I would run on win7 and i was going for more of a pc tower than anything. What did you think of the Acer Aspire?

It seems to have a nice graphics card (http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gt_320_us.html) Huge harddrive, 6gb ram, intel core 15.

Do you think this would be a better choice for a pc tower?

That acer desktop will definitely get you a lot more bang for your buck then the toshiba but that's always the case with laptops vs desktops. Acer has core i5 vs i3 on toshiba (I hear i3's are just rebranded core2 duo's), more ram, more hd space. They both have a decent graphics card though.

So yeah, that acer is a significantly more powerful machine than the toshiba. And it's not refurbished from the sounds of it.

The toshiba still would make a great laptop and be an alright gaming machine but you might lose out on higher end/newer games.

That's what i thoguth untill i read this: http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/desktop_pcs/acer/aspire_m5811_desktop_pc/336717

Quote "The only drawback is that it can't be used extensively for gaming."
So now im starting to re think

That is strictly due to the graphics card. Put in another graphics card and it'll do fine. If you don't have to have 'the total' package right away get it... see what games run well on it (most well with a 3.2ghz hyperthreaded i5) stick to those games until you can afford a better graphics card.

At least it comes with a 7200 rpm drive instead of a 5400 rpm drive. Your games will have snappier load time thanks to that and the processor. Just not the best resolution or frame rate with graphics rendering until you get a new card.

The one thing that would suck is if the current tv tuner/graphics card took up the one and only pci-e x16 slot you'd have to take it out to put another card in. Hopefully you can use that card in another pc when you don't need it in this one.

PC Expansion Slots
Expansion Slots PCI Express x1, PCI Express x16, PCI Express x4
Number of PCI Express x16 Slots 1

The only other reason they may say you can't use a system extensively for gaming would be if it had inadequate cooling. But that can be handled with modestly cheap upgrades.

IMO.

I'm sure you could find a comparable system that just has a different graphics card. You'd be sacrificing the tv tuner feature for higher graphics performance.
