Where does Google get its space for Gmail?

This has been puzzling me for a while now-when I go to the Gmail login page, you see the "Over 7xxx.xxxxx MB and counting of free space!". My Q is, how are they getting these numbers? How is it they are advancing a few *.0001 MB every second, instead of GBs or something large every few months like they added an HD or something? Somebody explain this.

I'd imagine they are just averaging it out as they expand. You're thinking of it as an actual reference to when they upgrade something the number changes. I think what they are actually doing is spreading that upgrade across a day, month, or year to keep a continuous count.

Thats just my guess though.

I thought of that too, but I really don't see the point of adding to your space by *.00001 MB a second. Maybe it's just their way, but I still don't see the point.

Well, I suppose if you consider the number of Gmail accounts they have to spread that over. They would have to increment by that small of a number to keep up appearance. Going up by 1MB would take forever. It just doesn't look as nice as seeing a good 20 point jump, no matter how small it actually is.

Its probably some kind of marketing technique.

Well, I got my Google Account I think in April or May, maybe earlier, not sure, but when I got it the free storage was 73xx MB. Now it's 74xx or something. Maybe it's a marketing technique, and maybe it's just because it looks good.
