What's a good brand of computer?

I have a buddy who is looking for his first computer and wants something cheap. All he plans to do is surf the internet and check his email. Maybe print off pictures or something like that. He has a 8 year old son who wants to play games but shouldn't be anything you need a fancy computer for. Just games any basic machine nowadays should run.

His daughter is telling him that she has a HP that's been great for 4 years and she just had to replace the hard drive this year where as most of her friends with Dell's have had a lot of problems with their computers. She says she wouldn't get a Dell.

Then there is me on the other hand who thinks HP is crap. I personally think he should let me build him a machine as he could get a ton more for a good price however, I think he wants to pay $5-600 or so and I don't think you could build a machine worth a damn for that. If I'm buying one from one of the main companies Dell is the only cheaper one I'd go with. I like Alienware and Voodoo PC but they are way out of his price range.

He is still not sure if he wants a laptop or a desktop. He wants to look at both. I have a Dell laptop and it's on it's 3rd hard drive. The first one crashed a month or two after we got it then that one lasted 3-4 years then it finally crashed. It's had almost everything in it replaced just recently. Everything other than the Ram which I ended up adding to and the cd burner. We had the extended warranty. However, with all these issues it's still way better than the Sony I had previously that had numerous repairs under the 1 year warranty and died right after that ran out.

Most of what I know about computers is outdated nowadays as I haven't read reviews and studied them too much in the last 3 years or so. For someone like this that just wants a basic cheap machine that will last what's the best brand to go with? I'm still trying to talk him into a nice machine but I don't think I will get too far with that.

So are HP and Dell considered to be on the same level or is one better than the other?

No way imo......Dell laptops are fantastic but their Desktops are not as good.

Hp are so much better than Dell systems,I would buy another Hp anyday.

Well... dell sucks for desktops anymore.. For people on a budget id go for a gateway, compaq, or hp. Actually... the more i think about it, the best system for someone on a budget would probably be an emachines if its just for basic usage, good cheap price on emachines;)

For something low budget...i wouldnt recommend dell as dell uses some pretty crappy quality parts in their low end systems, the only thing dell makes good anymore are laptops, their desktops 4-5 years ago were alright, but anymore i wouldnt touch a dell with a 10ft pole. Everyone ive known with a dell has had issues with something on it...

Actually Dell uses very high quality parts. Its one of the reasons why they are so expensive.

Dell's are cheap and they don't use high quality parts. They're general use machines, unless you're looking at the XPS series, which are decent gaming rigs.

I beg to differ. Once again my Dad's computer has been running for 8 years with no problems. There have to got to be some good parts in the comp!

My Sony Vaio has been running for six years, but I wouldn't describe the parts in that machine as high quality. Depends on your definition of high, I guess. In that machine, I've had to replace the primary hard drive and DVD burner. Everything else is running fine, so far, although I believe the cpu fan is on it's last leg.

Yeah I see what you mean. I meant high in that they use name brands and they actually make their own ram for their comps. The ram they make and use is really good!

Lol, high quality doesnt mean how long it lasts... i have an emachines etwoer 600mhz that uses crappy as heck parts and still runs fine, anymore though dell seems to be using even more subpar parts than they used to, as their older computers that are 4-5 years old were built with ok parts, not as cheap as they stuff they try to sell anymore though.

Dell doesn't make their own RAM dude. They're generic sticks probably from Samsung, Kingston, Qimoda or other manufactures. This is true for all OEM machines.

Yeah, ive seen some with some really off brand stuff in it, the old dimension 3000's used memory from some brand i hadnt even heard of... im gonna have to ask my friend what kinda memory it was, dont even remember the name lol

Dell lied to me? They said my dad's computer had Dell ram that was made by Dell. I have looked at it and it has no other markings besides Dell written in green across each stick.

Dell does not fabricate their own RAM. Do the auto makers make their own parts? No, they have suppliers. Same is true with computer builders.
