What size fan does a Socket 7 heatsink take?

The CPU fan on my PowerSpec 7856 is really quite loud, and has been getting louder over the past few months and is starting to squeal lately.

EDIT: Further research states this is a Socket 370 processor??

What size fan does this unit take (in mm)?

No processor/socket has a specific size fan. It's all relative to the heatsync and what's on there. I've had an 80mm fan on a SocketA heatsync before, and there are some newer ones with NO fan...

Also, they never made a Socket7 Pent III, just Pentiums. Then it went to Slot1 with the PII, then a few PIII's where Slot one, but newer ones were socket 370.
 
I have a molex-connected (no motherboard control) fan lying here that would fit... Is it ok to have the fan run at full speed all of the time? It blows down on the heatsink, correct?

The fan that's on there now has some metal clip on either side of the fan that reaches down and appears to clip into the fins on the side of the heatsink. Each clip has 2 metal pieces going through the screw holes on the fan.

How does that come off?

I finally got those clips off and put on the 'always at full RPM' fan. I just left the old CPU fan laying in the case up by the PSU because the wire was wrapped around the clip of the heatsink and I didn't feel like taking it off since I went through enough with the fan clips.

The stats:

Old fan -- With a bunch of small blades and a shot bearing---Temp: 185*F

New fan --- 4 big blades and almost new -- Always at full RPM --- Temp: 163*F

Not to mention it no longer squeals anymore and is much quieter

damn.... 163F is *goes to CALC.EXE* 72C!!!! That's going to fry your proc sooner or later. I recommend you get some AS5 and a decent HSF like the Spire WhisperRock 5. It's pretty easy to install a heatsink/fan. BTW: @TOO, it's 'heatsink', not 'heatsync'.
