What kind of wireless adapter could turn into an access point?

What kind of wireless adapter could turn into an access point?

I am trying to establish an access point on my centrino laptop. But after changed lots of settings, couldn't get it work. Is there a particular type of wireless adapter could do that, and some couldn't. Or all of the wireless adapter could do that? How?
