What is it like to be a computer tech at stores? Staples, Best Buy, other

I'm looking for a job and figure someone on this forum must have held a job as a computer tech for one of these businesses in the title.

Is it fun or mostly people just complaining about something nothing tech related?

Would it be a good idea? I don't mind talking with people and I've taken a Spanish class that I somehow passed with flying colors.

Well, i can just say one thing about the best buy "geek squad", and that is that they usually know almost nothing, more or less seems like they try to hire people who make good salespeople, not people who are actually very tech savvy.

FINALLY I find some one who agrees with me yes thank you. I am not sure how the geek squad tech's do their jobs on a day to day basis. They dont know much, they know enough to make customers happy and I think thats about it I mean not bashing best buy because I love that store I just think that with as fast as technology is changing they need to hire people that know more about what they are doing.

I would still like to become a tech like that though or own my own shop I just think that would be so cool.

I don't think it would be fun at all, not at any of the big names anyway. Answering incredibly stupid questions all day long, and most likely having to tolerate a know-nothing boss.

It would probably be tolerable at a smaller store, where it's a bit more relaxed, and your boss would actually be a tech person.

Yep I love working at my computer shop I can't think of anything else I'd rater do besides porn:D. Seriously though the geek squad knows nothing when it comes to tech stuff. Try finding a job at at computer shop/store where you get to build and repair computer all day it's the best job in the world besides porn:D.

There's a little computer store that sells and repairs computers just a few miles away with the ironic name "Computers". I was just wondering about the bigger businesses since they would have better employee plans. I'm willing to take some guff from people if it means I can get better worker's comp. $2,000 dollar a month injections aren't cheap.

I work in a New Zealand computer shop, PB Tech. I really like it. I work 6 hours, it's only really busy 2-3 hours of the day. The rest of the time I sit at my desk and go online, or I go and play CoD4. We even have CoD4 arcade mode competitions on Saturdays. :D

Sure, you have to listen to some dumb questions, but that's going to happen in any service industry. It's unavoidable. My boss is probably the one of the nicest and calmest guys I've ever met. Plus he knows his stuff if I can't answer a customers question. People tell horror stories about stupid customers, but really a good salesperson will explain everything simply enough to avoid such stupid questions.

The only issue I have is that since I'm hard of hearing and most of the clientele don't speak English as their first language, I find myself asking them to repeat what they said. That's pretty much the only thing that frustrates me. Oh, and customers who think we are trying to scam them when the product specs are right in front of them...

I like going to Best Buy and playing with the Geek Squad brains, if that what they call it in their heads. I have a friend that is not very computer savoy. And he goes over to Best Buy and ask questions then try to tell me what they said he should do. I would tell him if he wants to mess up his computer, to go for it. But, don't call me to fix it.

I keep seeing people all over the internet talk about GeekSquad...are they really that bad?

What kind of training do they have to be hired there?

I've never seen them...are they in the Best Buy stores?

I am American but have not lived in the states for 10 years:D I have no idea what these guys are.

I know some people that work at Best Buy and ACTUALLY KNOW what they are doing/talking about.
And I also used to work for Circuit City's Firedog. The people I work with knew what they were talking about.
And it was boring at times with little to nothing to do on some days. And other days it was frustrating answering the same questions
over and over again.
But all in all, if you know what you're doing it isn't bad.

Walk into any Best Buy store and look for the guys in white shirts.

What kind of training do they have to be hired there?
Not sure, but Circuit City had me take a test which is similar to the CompTIA
A+ Certification

Yup. They even go to your house.

Thanks for enlightening me:D

I think it would be great to work in a computer shop...that would be the ultimate job if you ask me!

I worked in a computer shop for 2 months, it was fun! It was like getting paid to do your hobby! Basically, i ran general maintenance on the store computers, answered customer questions, did what we called a Blow Job on customers computers (compressed air to get all the dust out). I also got to create and setup some systems from scratch. Some of the boring stuff inlcuded Stocking shelves, going to customers home's to setup their repaired computers, and do the dishes in the kitchen...
In the end me and the boss decided that the store needed more of a business person than someone tech savvy, so I quit/got fired. All in all it was a good experience, I highly recommend working in a computer store!

I job shadowed Circuit City's Firedog back in 2007, they did have a great understanding of computers, and were very friendly people. Geek Squad on the other hand.... lol
