what is a server?

can someone plz tell me wat a server is and wat it doese?

There are different kinds of servers.

Lets say a school has a file server. That server holds the data on the network, so you can access your files from any computer that is connected to it. It's a pretty vague description, but hopefully you get an idea of what it is.

There are also numerous other types of servers, such as web server, e-mail server, game server, ect.

Its a common place (via a network or internet) where things are retreieved from. The things that could be retrieved could be files, a game connection or a service.
