Background info I have a laptop running xp pro and an old desktop running 98se. I used to be able to connect the 2 via cross over cable.

I put on the service packs to the xp laptop and no longer was able to connect to the 98se desktop as each time I tried to connect to it it asks me for a password. I dont think I have ever added a password to protect any of my computers as I am the only user. Certainly I am the admin on the laptop and do not use a passord to get in.

I recently borrowed an xp desktop with the service packs installed and I put on a switch on my network making a total of 3 pcs on the network. I can see all of the pcs on the network from any one of the computers but I cannot again access the laptop. From the borrowed desktop with xp a error message appears saying I may not have permission to use this resourse. From the 98se desktop agin it askes for a password.

I really think it is something obvious I have done but with limitied knowledge of XP I am struggling. Please help.

Does your user account use a password? If so, thats the password.

However, this might get RID of the password...

Turn OFF simple file sharing.

To do so, go to My Documents, go to TOOLS--->Folder Options-->View and uncheck the bottom one.

Then, go to the folder(s) you have shared and right click. go to properties. Go to sharing, then click permissions. Add a group called EVERYONE. Give "everyone" full access rights. This might solve the problem.

Dave,

Thanks for the reply Dave unfortunately no joy as yet. I tried all that you said but still the same result. I dont use a password on startup to access the laptop machine. Not sure if this is the answer you were looking for.

However as an experiement I decided to change the settings of the 98 desktop so there were no folders with permission to share. When I did this I still got access to the 98 machine from the xp desktop but there was obviously no folder available to open.

The laptop is different once I double click on it from the desktop with XP I getting a warning tone, and a statement to say "laptop is unaccessable"

So Im begining to think its not a probelm with the folder permissions but rather a block before even getting access to the laptop.

Any ideas ??

Well I was searching google, and one site said "If Simple File Sharing is not disabled, shared folders will not be password-protected"

So, without double negatives, that means turn ON simple file sharing and this goes away...(duno if you tried that or not:confused: )

As for my own thoughts....you could try uninstalling, and then reinstalling File Sharing in XP. To do so...

1 - Go to Network Connections. Right click on your active internet connection
2- go to properties
3 - Click on "File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks" and click Uninstall.
4 - Click Install, go to services and reinstall "File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks"

Then you'd have to reshare your files/folders. See if that helps.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply I just got around to checking a short time ago. Did everything your google search had suggested but no joy. Also tried your own suggestion no luck. However a minor breakthrough since and maybe this might give another clue tot he problem. I have discovered I can connect to either of the desktops pcs (xp or 98) if I initiate it from the laptop, and can ansfer files, but I still cant make a contact with the laptop if I initiate it from either desktop.

At least now I am able to transfer files, and can live with this, but as a final query any ideas why this happens. In the menatime thanks for all the help.

Regards Glenn
