What exactly is OEM?

I'm looking at this LG drive and this LG OEM drive (both have the same product number, UH10LS20). The OEM version is $5 cheaper. The pictures of the retail version include a photo with screws, cables, a manual and CD-ROM. The OEM version doesn't have this picture. If I buy the OEM version, will I receive these items?

Normally OEM for computer parts mean you don't get all the extra items, such as cables and Manuals. Hence why they didn't include the picture with the OEM one.

What are the differences between the OEM and retail versions of a product?

Retail versions may come with additional accessories, retail packaging, bundled software and warranty coverage. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), White Box and Brown Box versions include the product and sometimes the drivers, but not much else. They are packaged generically and do not include software. OEM products are best-suited for system builders who don't require documentation or bundled accessories.

OEM software is delivered in a generic sleeve or container with little to no documentation or instructions. Because the serial number is exposed, OEM software cannot be refunded. Retail software comes with greater warranty coverage, all available retail packaging and accessories.

Agree to everyone. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. I bought Windows XP OEM version which is more cheaper than the retail version. It did not come in a very nice packaging but worked just as the same.

According to me OEM stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturer", and those are the folks like Dell and HP and Sony ..
I run a computer shop and i am also sell new and used auto parts of computer everyday. My new aftermarket parts are "OEM" they are similar like OEM, such as the fit, its style, and some 97% the quality as dealer products. And whenever you see OEM on a website such as ecstuning..etc., means that the parts fit as OEM but would be considered an OEM replacement part. The real OEM would come from the dealer . Honestly there is not really a difference in non-dealer purchased items, and I can back this up my dad's business has been open since 1986 and has never had any problems with our new parts. So it's just at your discretion.
