What does this error message mean please?

I couldn't find where else to ask this: I have been copying a lot of files to another HDD (E: drive on the same PC) and 6 video files I have tried to copy/move keep giving me the message: "Could not copy [name of file]: Data Error: Cyclic Redundancy Check" The files are a mixture of MP4, MPG, FLV and are not large, between 300Mb and 750Mb in size.

I have also posted another question elsewhere about my HD which I think might be failing (that's why I am backing up now) and I am wondering if this error is something to do with the HD not working properly?

Thanks

a crc error indicates a bad spot on your hdd or a bad file.in your case im leaning to the hdd as being the culprit considering what you said in your other thread.try doing a chkdsk on the drive.go to run and type the following command. C:>CHKDSK /R .

thanks for the reply but it didn't work. there was a space in the line which i took out and also tried about 6 different similar things like just c:chkdsk and with the forward slash but kept getting error message: "Windows cannot find ****, please check the name and try and again

This is most likely a bad hard drive. Find out what brand of hard drive it is and run the drive manufacturers disk diagnostic program, run the extended test.

chkdsk /r .note the space between the k and the forward slash. and as john said, could be a bad drive, but chkdsk is worth a try.

^ also note the period is simply ending the sentence and not part of the command ;)

It may take a while depending on how much data you have on the drive. For a system drive it will schedule a chkdsk on the next reboot, so you'd want to say Y when prompted, and then reboot.
