i have set of screw drivers
enclosure harddrive to simply backdata
puppylinux CD to boot in CDrom inorder to remove viruses and etc..

i'm new to this, i just repair computers in our village and i think i've gained costumers even from the neighboring village. so i need your opinion and suggestions

what else do you usually need as a tech?

Digital volt meter is worth having. Also some wire and PSU pin out information if you ever need to jump start one.

Then maybe spare SATA IDE cables and SATA/molex PSU connectors.

Screwdrivers
Windows Installation Discs
Hiren's Boot CD
External HDD
Different types of memory used for testing

Those are the major ones I use on a daily basis.

multimeter, psu tester, screwdrivers (electric are best), thermal paste, surgical spirit or something to clean thermal paste, anti static wrist strap, loads of spare cables, possibly i soldering iron and flux/solder, spare screws blah blah the list goes on :P

No need for the wrist strap imo, never used one, never fried a component.

Windows installation discs, at least for XP, Vista and 7

still its better to be safe than sorry, especially when working on a customers computer.

I use a wrist strap (actually, I have an ESD mat, too), and I have seen ESD damage done from not using one.

Besides, it impresses the customers.

How deep are you going to go? Most calls I do (as the 'tech friend') are software-related, so a full set of software tools (UBCD, a Linux disc, a Windows disk, and a couple USB drives with antimalware) I have on-hand when making house-calls. If I were actually making money doing house-calls, then I'd probably invest in an air-card so I could download up-to-date drivers and such on-site.

In my garage (the so-called Dngrlab) I have a full set of tools, including crimpers for Molex pins, a soldering station, etc. I used to do mods, so I had built up a couple specialty power cables and such.

something like this

a small cd wallet, with XP, Vista, 7 discs in it, or any other OS you work with. a Memtest cd or the Ultimate boot cd.

a USB drive with some fairly up to date spy/malware removal tools on it. a copy of wireshark or smartsniff.

that should be enough without getting too clunky. I never use wrist straps either...

i once forgot some tools i have like long nose pliers. i use it when some pins are twisted.
do you guys also bring your client's computer to your home if you can't fix it in their house?

9 times out of 10 it is a malware problem... if it is that i like to just bring it home for a day or 2 and really clean it up. Anything else can usually be done at their house.
