What do consider when buying a new computer?

What sorts of questions should I ask the computer sales employee if I want to buy a new computer?

What qualities make for a good computer?

What questions do you ask?

I mainly use the computer to surf the net. I do lots of research using the internet, I also watch lots of youtube videos as well as. I like listening to music and watching anime too. So, anybody got any ideas on what sort of computer I should look out for?

How do you know if a particular computer is for you?

It seems like a tough decision. How does everyone know which one to get or which one is good?

What is it that defines a good computer?

What is it that define a lousy computer?

Anyway, I really don't know much about computers so hopefully somebody from this forum can shed some light for me.

Thanks

firstly don't take what the sales guys say at face value, from your needs a slightly better than entry level PC would suit you fine, obviously you want it last more than a year or 2 so choose a renowned manufacturer, apple, dell ,hp/compaq. these generally have the highest reliability rates in the industry outside of custom builds, if you are looking for windows 7 machine machine should at minimum have a dual core celeron or pentium processor, if budget allows an intel i3 is a good base point for a basic machine, 3gb minimum of ram any more is a bonus really, and harddrive is based on your requirements really as most machines come with 250gb plus nowadays, avoid norton and mcafee like the plague and fish for the best deal if you need ms office or the like. a good budget for an entry level machine would be around £400 this would include a decent screen kb and mouse and should squeeze in the above requirements alright.

hope that can be of some help for you..

Best advice I can say...

Do not rely on a salesperson to tell you what will best suit you. 9 times outta 10, if you go to a store and a salesperson senses you don't know any better or are ignorant of whats necessary/not necessary, you will get taken advantage of.

If you are looking for a new computer, I recommend to ask people on here to give you the advice/info you need so you don't need to ask a salesperson for help...except to ring up the machine you know you want!

as always it depends on what you will be using your computer for, you dont want to buy to underpowered but by the same you dont want to overspend on a machine with more power than you will use, obviously one of the main components is the cpu the faster the better i generally stick to 2.6ghz or higher and at least dual core.

memory is important aswell the minimum recommended for vista & 7 is 1gb but 2gb is probably the lowest you should go.

if you intend gaming or doing video editing etc you will want a decent graphics card with at least 512mb onboard memory.

finally the size of your hard drive this is important with regards to the amount of files you intend to store, if its just docs, music and a few pics you could make do with as small as 160gb, if you intend have alot of video files you should be looking at anything from 500gb up to 1tb

Like the others have said , dont go by what the salesman says. He will sell you a terd just to make a sale. Salesmen are paid to move merchandise wether its what you need or not, its a sale. You have to know what you want...These folks here are more than willing to help you determine what you need, just ask and read.

It was kind of funny, me and my wife went it to best buy one day and I really hate there employees and when I went in there I would stand next to a laptop and wait for one to come by and ask if I needed any help, then I would tell them what I wanted to do with my computer. Whatever computer I was standing by they would try and sell me whether it was going to fit me needs or not.

After they got done explaining I would go back through the specs with them and explain why that computer would not do what I wanted due to it lacking in certain hardware areas. I love going on there sometimes and F**king with there employees.
