What codec do I need?

I'm tryin to import a vid into the windows movie maker but it says:

"cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

The file I'm tryin to import in an .avi video file and I dunno anythin about codecs. I don't think I have any codecs on my laptop at the moment cos I recently re-installed windows xp.

What codecs do I need and where can I get em?

I'd just download and install K-Lite codec pack, comes with a whole heap of codecs... should solve pretty much any missing codec problems.
 
I just downloaded everything you guys hav replied but it still comes up with the same error message:

somebody will know and im guessing.
looking at your location it says UK.
I do not know if AVI formats are the same in UK and USA. its pal and ntsc.
depends on where ya got it. it is possible since im running out of options you may have to render into another format. say from states (ntsc to uk pal). not sure yet but will be watching. you could try commercial software that gives you the option to convert. (pal to ntsc or the other way). choose the format ya need then render to your country in pal if thats whats needs. its a 30 day trial. thats all it does is render and shrink or convert to another format with any def ya want. on the otherhand avi is very poor quality mostly. seen a few good ones though.
