i have one desktop setup with DSL... and i just bought a labtop last week... i want to go wireless for the labtop. is there a way to keep my desktop hardwired through my dsl modem (not wireless on the desktop) and buy a wireless router and network card for the labtop?? or does both have to go wireless?? i dont want to have to buy a pci wireless card for my desktop when i just bought the dsl modem for it not that long ago..

noo, you can just buy a router and a network card 4 the laptop, your desktop can stay hardwired, it just has 2 be unplugged from the modem, and be plugged into the router, than into the comptuer..

thanks, is there a specific router i need to buy, or any will do??? and what router/network card do you guys recommend for a distance of 3 floors (15 yards)

hmmm the only issue i see is the distance of 3 floors (15 yards) you might be worth looking carefully at the routers to see what their distance is. Netgear have a set of Rangemax routers that do a damn good job over further distances. I found that with my old router it had trouble picking up just one floor up but the new rangemax one is going well.

i bought a wireless-B pc card for my notebook.... does that mean i have to buy a wireless router thats for B networking? or can i get G routers and others?

G routers are backwards compatable with B. I would recomend going with a linksys or buffalo router, they have more options and a lot of that speed boosting crap is marketing. By default almost all consumer routers only pump out a 28 ~ 30mW signal for their wireless.

See how much ram is in the router for one, and see what type of firmware is supports. There are plenty of third party firmware out there that support boosting the signal. My wireless is broadcasted (securely of course) in about 300 feet omni directional of its location. At 300 feet you can get 1 to 2 bars of signal and still browse the net.
