What are IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers?

I had to reformat my Sony VAIO laptop after a crash and I needed to reinstall the drivers. Unfortunately my laptop didn't come with a recovery CD and the Vaio website wasn't helpful at all:( . A scan by driveragent.com revealed that I had a bad IDE ATA/ATAPI controller (specifically ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller). I found a driver for it, but I don't want to install without knowing what it is first. So far, my laptop seems to be working fine, though. Do I really need to install an IDE controller driver?

Sorry, I don't know know much about this stuff. Help would be greatly appreciated.:)

an IDE controller, is litearlly something that controls the IDE bus and items on that bus. IDE is a type of interface found in almost every computer worldwide. If you ever look in a PC, the IDE cables are the big white flat ones (usually). If your laptop is working fine, including your CD drives and your hard drives, then there is NO REASON why you would need to install a different IDE controller. If you are experincing slow transfrer rates from drives/discs/hard drives etc... then yes, install, note that installing a drive rnot specifically written for your laptop, could cause more problems than what you started with..

hope that helps

Thanks a lot, Dragon2309! ;) The laptop seems to be fine, so I won't be installing the driver.

EDIT many days later...

I noticed my laptop was heating up a LOT more than usual and making noises so I decided to jump the cliff and install the driver...

...and now my laptop's working much better :)
