Hi guys,

I have been trying to solve a problem and i have now hit a brick wall.

My screen started blinking last week then all of a sudden it went black, pc was still running fine.

Restarted it and i had green and purple lines on boot up, its gets to windows xp loading screen still in green and purple and then it goes black.

So i tried a different tv (i'm using dvi to hdmi), still the same. Bought a new cable, still the same. Bought an identical GPU and that made it worse, no boot up screen at all.

Don't know where to go now, i feel its video related but i can only assume. Any ideas?

Many thanks. :)

Well i did replace the GPU but it made things worse. I got not video output at all, it should have worked as its an identical GPU.

Any ideas what i can try next?

I did have this same problem back in 2006 but i was able to F8, run safe mode and reset graphics settings and its been fine since now. Same sort of thing but this time i can get the F8 screen to show and its all purple and green...:(

that means it probably was a software related issue, but since u cant even get there...

Can u see the bootup screen from the motherboard, or can u get to the BIOS?

always a possibility something went nuts with hardware. but who knows. gotta test more

only thing i can suggest is trying to boot from something else. thumb drive with linux on it, for example. if that runs fine, you know your hardware runs fine. and if you cant get to the f8, any possibility you can run another computer next to it and do the same on that as yours?

also, like asked above, can you see the bios screen n whatnot? if you can, then the screen gets screwy afterwards, you know its probably issues with software. however, if it is hard to see straight from turning on the comp, its a hardware problem

I can see the bios, but has green and purple lines down it, if i F8 it goes blank, if i leave it to boot it goes to windows xp screen (still with green and purple lines) and then goes blank.

I will try and do as you advised and get another pc alongside and try and get it into safe mode. I may have to ask a favour if i cant, for someone to write down a step by step as i cant remember what the F8 screen looks like. Thanks.

Managed to get it into safe mode and this is what ive got.

Ive tried to connect to the net to try and update a video driver but it wont let me even in networking mode and wont let me open up the nVidia nView Manager.

Any ideas where i can go from here guys?

Thanks.

Well that looks like a dead GPU. But you said you replaced it... tried running memtest? do you have an integrated GPU you could try?

I have a 2nd hand 7600GT that i bought from ebay and tried it but made it worse, had no screen at all, just blank. Might have bought a dodgy card?

The motherboard doesnt have any onboard graphics, well i can't see a vga socket lets put it that way. Is memtest something i would run in Start/Run...?

you need to download memtest from another computer, burn it to a cd and boot it from the faulty computer and it well test all the memory
