Webcams and Hackers

Hello,

According to my friend, having a webcam increases the risks of being hacked or perhaps of having some malicious things(to stay general) happening to your computer.

I don't see how that could be the case, but I just want to check it out with some people who know a lot more about webcams than I do. Is there a bit of truth in that ?

Some hackers will have a way to access your web-cam port and bypass your firewall, to make sure this doesn't happen. Make SURE:

1) You have a up-to-date firewall
2) Turn off your web-cam when you are not using it

Just make sure they don't hack the USB missile launcher with the Webcam!! Hilarious!!

As long as you have some protection, and don't go on shifty sites you should be fine. Turning it off like ambushed said when your not using it is also a good idea.

Most newer webcams come with a shield to cover the lens of the webcam when not in use. That way you don't have to unplug it or turn it off/on everytime.

So, as long as your computer is protected by an up to date Antivirus and Firewall, it shouldn't be any problem, right ?
