Web Server

I want to install linux (I Have), and phpbb.com 's Bulletin board software as well as a webserver on a server. I was gonna use a desktop PC but then I realized it is WAY too unreliable. Is there a really cheap server that I can buy?? and what is a good web server?? I was using apache for a while until I couldn't get it to start the server again.

cheap server?

how is it unreliable?

You may be better off not hosting it yourself and having someone else host it for you, that actually has decent bandwidth and servers already in place.

I second what tlarkin said... I've run some web servers at my house for the heck of it, but it's normally much better to just let someplace with the real hardware and internet connection do it.

The problem is I don't have the money to pay someone to host a website for me. I don't know of a free host that will install the PHPBB software. If anyone knows of one, then will just get that. It's unreliable, because that computer is running win 98, and is old. Plus at my home, the power seems to go out WAYYY too much in the summer. finally, my computer does not have a large amount of memory, I would have to do some upgrades to this computer before I ever want it to be a server.

first off windows 98 has about zero security just so you know, secondly, you can run a linux distro and run apache with out taking up too much resources and it is secure, finally to run any kind of web server on windows XP (you can't use 2000) you would have to install and run IIS. Again full of security holes and on top of that it requires more hardware.

You can get hosting as cheap as 10 dollars per a month. So what is your budget then? You are going to have to make a choice to either have someone host it, or get some kind of line coniditioner UPS + a new computer in your home to host it.

The problem with my budget is that I am 14. I don't have a job, but I am working on getting one. Even if I do have the money to spend, I don't want to spend it until I get people using the forum. Right now I have my forum hosted from www.jconserv.net but that is just the forum. I want to have an additional site, not just the forum, and it would be really convenient to have them on the same server.

Definitely do Linux if you have no budget since its free software. I would go check out some linux community message boards.
