WD Caviar Black is faster than Raptor.

So there is this guy all over craigslist selling computers and his claim is that the black is faster than the raptor. I know it takes a RAID array to see a raptor really shine but still...

What do you think? Am I crazy or is he talking up his builds? Also he claims his rigs are high end gaming machines but they seem more like midrange to me. Maybe high end last year but a ati 48xx is not high end anymore.

If he means the original raptor hard drives, then he is most likely correct. The original raptor gives you a 5.6 on the experience index, and transfer rate is roughly 70mb/s, where as modern 7200rpm drives give transfer rates in excess of 110mb/s.

If he is talking about the new Raptor X drives, then he is just talking poo, lol

Depends on the drive.

The 2TB Caviar Black is a complete boss, due to its 4 500GB platters.

It will have higher read and write speeds, though its access times will be higher due to the Raptor's higher spin speed.

I would say no, perhaps even go with one of the "green" drives.

definitely do NOT get a raptor for an HTPC, way too LOUD!


If you have to $, get a solid state disk! Even if you just get a 30gb for a boot drive, it makes a world of difference.
