W7 refuses to install AC'97 drivers - only left channel audio

Hi there, just upgraded to Windows 7.
My front sound jack works, but when I connect my speakers to the on-board sound card I only get the left channel. So I figure it's the drivers.
Well, Windows says my audio drivers are up to date, so I manually downloaded the W7 32-bit drivers from Realtek. When I try to update the drivers, telling windows to use this folder, it still says the latest drivers are installed. I resorted to running setup.exe in the driver folder and that seemed to be going alright until:
Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software
<press Install this driver software anyway>
installation hangs at about 90% and the security message continually pops up.

what do?

Is the problem with the left channel just with the front audio connections or both front and rear. If it's just the front, I'd check the connection to the motherboard.

As for installing the drivers, can you locate the INF in the packet? If so, try directing Device Manager there through the advanced hardware installation rather than using the software installer. That usually works better.

If the above's solution doesn't work, then I'd say find the driver position from Device Manager, Delete it, Reinstall. It can't hurt. :D

if you have 7 professional or ultimate you can install the drivers in compatibility mode for as far back as xp sp2. also when install do so as administrator. i have 7 ultimate running an old 4x agp video card in the guest room, even though initially windows said, "no"
