Volume problems on vista ;(

Hey everyone, my friend referred me to this site and said you might be able to help :).

I've had a compaq desktop running vista for just over a year now and I've had no problems with it at all. Yesterday I unplugged my headphones (which have been working fine) and plugged in a music port wire from my cd player (which usually works), and this pops up..

I tried plugging my headset back in, with no change. Tried restarting a couple of times but no luck.

Please help! :) thanks, April x

Welcome to the forum April!

Music port wire? Is this internally? Or, were you attaching a CD player to your mic/line in port?

When you bring up your sound control panel, do you see any devices that you can set to default audio out?

Hey zatharus, and thanks! :) I'm not so great with computers as you can see.

I was attaching a cd player to my line in port... which usually works fine (like using the cd player to replace pc speakers)

I have no idea what has happenned or why, i checked on the HP website and it told me to reinstall my audio drivers, which I have, with no luck ):

It's not giving me the option to open my volume mixer, when I click "playback devices", i see "no audio devices are installed".

HUMPH...
thanks again xxxx

No problem April. :)

OK. What about in the Device Manager? What do you see under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers?

To get to the Device Manger goto: Start>Control Panel>System and Maintenance>System>Device Manager.

Also, can you tell me what model of desktop this is?

If you're using realtek_HD_AUDIO just open up RtHDVCpl (C:\hp\drivers\realtek_HD_AUDIO\Vista) go to sound manager then replug your audio device.

Oh snap.

@ Zatharus, I've got device manager open, but not seeing any sound/audio thingy ): sorry if this is total noob

Thankyou both so much for your help, I don't know why this has happenned<3

OK. Goto Start>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Add a Device. Does anything come up?

If not, you may want to check in your BIOS to make sure that the on-board audio is enabled.

hmf. another slight problem, my windows explorer has "stopped working" when i try to open control panel. Managed to find "add hardware" and so added the hardware to support realtek audio

all was looking good until this happenned ->

and fyi when I click the advanced bit, all i see is "this device does not require any resources"

THANKS again guys if you're ever in the uk i'm buying your drinks all night xx

When you open it it usually pops up on taskbar you just right click then go to sound manager then speaker config. and when it says there is no audio device installed just plug it in right then. That always helps with my vista audio problems :)

Thanks guys, I just double checked and it doesn't pop up in my taskbar. *sigh*

as for the virus scan, I'll do that tonight.

In device manager the realtek audio thing i installed is showing up, as well as my usb webcam (built in mic). thanks a lot xxx

Hey guys a random update..

got on my pc today frustrated to see that the sound was still not working. Whilst I was busy cursing away we had a powercut, which lasted 5 or 10 seconds.. even more irate I switched my pc on again, by which time I was in a really bad mood..

Proof vista can kiss my ass? The sound is now miraculously working.

Thanks for your help folks, love you (:
