Hey, I'm new to this, and i have a question..

Lately, my sound keeps on muting all in the "volume" control in the taskbar. What may be the problem?

I have Windows 2000 Professional... and i have no idea what other things you might need. I think I have onboard sound. I know, I'm a little vauge, but I'm new to the computer world. If you need any other specs about my PC, just tell me how to get the info.

Jusy email me or post on this forum

Any help is appreciated.. thanks

-Karl

It sounds like the sound drivers are either damaged or missing. With Windows no longer detecting the hardware the end result seen is the muted controls for each item. Are you running a pre-built system or one that was custom built? A store bought will have a recovery disk with folders containing different drivers for that system. On a custom built the sound and other drivers will be found on the cd that came with the main board itself.

Hello,
First, yes, the computer is custom. I got it a year ago from a friend of mine. He gave me a cd with all of the drivers on it. Should I try getting a new sound card...or getting my driver's re-installed?

-thanks, karl

The first thing to try is the uninstall of the current softwares/drivers for the card you have and see if a reinstall is all that is needed. With Creative and other brand cards the use of the uninstaller for removal usually comes with the cd. That can be found at the support if not found there. For updates you may or may not have to use that. Sometimes it is required.

With the age being over one year already it could be the card if the reinstall of the drivers still sees problems. The usual however for most is that they simply quit when they are ready for a trash can. If you generally put some good loads on the card then at least you had a good year of use. I had a new one quit just about on the 1st anniversary.

Im having the same problem . I just recently started watchiing a movie I downloaded (Couldnt wait til the June DVD release ) and its an Avi. file. For the 1st week I had no problems at all, excellent video and audio. But in the last week the sound will just Mute randomly. All I have to do is touch the volume on my speakers (up or down) and it comes right back on. Not a major annoyance but would like to fix if I can. Tried updating my sound drivers (Still using onboard sound with Realtek AC'97, no sound card ) but didnt fix it. Im using RealPlayer and also Media Player Classic, get the same problem with both. Ive never had a problem with audio before.

Thanks

Update :

I tried completely Uninstalling the RealTek driver and re-installed.

Problem seems to be fixed!

That will work more often then realized. When a driver or drivers are made inactive you have to remove them fully to start with a fresh install to see that Windows makes them active. Try any new games or multimedia players lately? Sometimes a new install will knock out drivers.
