Voice Recognition Microphone

Ok, i'm currently writing a series of modules to setup voice recognition stuff for my house. Already written section for taking answer phone messages and reading them out.

What i need is some kind of high gain/array microhone that will allow me to provide voice orders from a distance. Like from the other end of the room.

Anyone got any ideas? Hopefully not too expensive ideas?

what you'll need is a good noise cancelling algorithm too heh. you could throw up a few omni-directional mics with a little preamp and get great volume from any noise... but you're gonna be hearing everything... footsteps, hum of the fridge, etc..

you might have to experiment with an audio compressor, that will level everything out so a whisiper is the same as a scream (to an extent...)

i would head over to www.recording.org, a pro audio forum. if the pros there can't help you, nobody can! they can help you out with every aspect of the audio chain

if you get this all to work, i'd love to hear about it... drop an update once in a while

Hopefully i should be able to get somthing pulled together soon, the hard part is going to be the voice activated TV in the kitchen, since the noise of the tv will drowned out any commands i issue. I wonder if there is a way to filter out the noise output from the mic input.

Thanks for you help anyway. This looks like i'm going to need to aquire a new skills set. Will post updates
