vista sound problems

i have recently installed vista, and my speakers now sound choppy and the back 2 speakers in my 5.1 surround sound have been disabled. does this mean that my sound card is not supported by vista?

I'm glad to see someone else is also having fun with sound in Vista. Forget updates if you are running a Creative Audigy model. The only drivers out are still the beta with no software patches at the moment. Are you running a card or strictly onboard sound there?

onboard..i'm running soundmax on an asus mobo

I am having the same problem yet vista recognizes them and when you do the sound test uses all of them but when doing playback it only plays on the 3 speakers and the sub not the rears its very annoying

The main problem for onboard besides the drivers is the software that comes along with the board as well. You can't set the sound to 5.1 without it resetting to the 2.5 default at this point. Once Asus comes out with the needed updates for that model as well as the one here you should see that corrected. Drivers are always far behind when a new version of Windows comes out.

oh man.........

Funny you and many are having this problem... I got the Beta version of VISTA from a Microsoft quarterly event from "TechNet", and surprisingly, I too installed it on an ASUS mobo with internal sound, it didn't work!

I had to slap an old SB LIVE card in it... and it worked. Except, that I couldn't get my microphone to work so I can use SKYPE - I really have to have skype, I use it a lot in fact. So, even with SB LIVE - there was no microphone.

Apparently there is problem with older mobo onboard sound not working with VISTA.

Might want to check compatibility list with Microsoft.

What Asus model board are you running? That can help here in locating the Vista capable drivers if they are available. Creative still has the same beta drivers seen last fall when RC1 came out for their Audigy line. Meanwhile the Asus support site is tied up as usual. :(

I have a socket 478 P4S533-MX, with an AD1980 SoundMax audio driver.

I've been trying to locate somewhere besides the Asus support site which only goes up to XP and WINSERVER 2003. One interesting heard on a different model was someone trying the mic jack when no sound was heard at all from the front or rear speaker jacks. Despite the lack of driver support for Vista by Creative I still get 5.1 and EAX effects from tinkering around iwith the original software and the beta drivers for the expansion card here. You won't like what SoundMAX has to say on this.

I have an Audigy 2 ZS on Vista. The BETA drivers are actually alright, in my opinion (I'm not a huge audiophile). Granted, XP versions were much better but I won't change back to XP. It'll be a while before full drivers are released but BETA seems to do me fine.

What soundcard do you have, if any?

The model here is the Audigy 4 Pro. When the updates do arrive the Audigy line could be in the "discontinued" catagory. You will still see the initial release of regular drivers but lack anything later when the newer models push the Audigy back.
