vista compatability issue

OK, I am trying to connect to the internet through a wireless signal from a 2003 Linksys router. My computer connects to the network, but will not connect to the internet. The problem?

The router is broadcasting for windows XP and does not give the option to broadcast for Vista. So, is there a way I can get Vista to connect to the signal disseminating from my old router?

If I were to dig-out the disk from my old router and insert it in my computer, would that make it connect or is my situation totally hopeless?

Thanks in advance for any help.

This isn't a Vista issue then...its a Linksys Issue.

Try resetting the router (via the pushable reset button) at the back and have to reconfigure. I have the same issue with my router as well. Worked for me.

Also go to the Linksys website and find your router and see if there is a firmware update which might help you.

Thanks, I will try that.

I need to get a signal out of it, however, that will work with both my XP and my Vista. Do you think I will have to get a new router in-order to accomplish this, or would a new router block-out my XP?

Thanks for your help.

mattwaab: the signal for xp and vista are the same, so that shouldn't be an issue.

That's what I thought, but when I printed out a bunch of material and read it to my friend, I was told that my router was set-up to broadcast for XP and that's why it won't work with my Vista.....weird.

update

Update: I tried resetting the "wireless network adapter", but that did not work either.

Someone earlier in the thread said that this isn't a Vista problem, it's a problem with the router. However, after doing some research online, I found several people who were having the same "limited access" wireless problem and claimed that it was a bug with the Vista OS. At least I am not alone:D.

Will be trying more things and posting the results. Any suggestions welcome.
