Ridiculously slowwwwwww page transitions on all browsers,
running XP Pro, Zone alarm only no antivirus.

So bad i reloaded XP "fresh" and by golly whatever that did,
it worked for a week.

I shoulda slipstreamed the new install, so I could reload it.

Restore won't restore.

This is a dell dual xeon desktop about 5 years old:
not the fastest, but rock solid, and no prob till now.

All relevent services are working,
no significant system or software warnings,
MS Config is oops:
OK there's a bunch of trash that loads,
which I've fixed.

I don't think that's the problem, but if it is,
I'll come back and say so.

Any suggestions?

do some general maintenance (get these programs):

Auslogics Disk Defrag
Auslogics Registry Cleaner
CCleaner
Malwarebytes (update to the latest version after installig)

Run them all once a week or so. I find that if you install/uninstall/move a lot of files you need to defrag once every 3 days.

What browser are you using, and what are yor system specs?

My parent's PC is an older Dell XPS 400. Its Internet Explorer boots up ridiculously slow and has slow page transitions, despite our high-speed broadband. They were getting awfully frustrated and eventually asked for my help. :P I defragmented, ran disk cleanup, reduced the amount of "always-running" programs on bootup (bottom-right, I forget what they are called), and finally convinced them to switch to Firefox. The problem was solved immediately after that.
