Using VGA cable Gateway to Samsung TV

This PC is five years old approximately and our tv is new. We used a VGA cable but get a black screen and no sound on the television. We called Samsung and they told us it was not the TV, it is the computer not allowing access. I do not know where to look. Can anyone help? The model number of the Gateway is GM5640E.

you will not get sound from the computer with a vga cable. You will need to use an audio cable also to have sound on the samsung TV.

TVs require a 15 pin VGA cable, in my experience this is probably your problem.

If you have a true 15 pin VGA cable, then the resolution is probably too low, or too high. Check the manuyal on the TV to see what the optimal resolution is, set it on the PC video card when hooked up to a normal monitor.

Have a look at the Function keys along the top of the keyboard (with the F Keys).

On my Asus its the Fn key and F8, but on others I have seen it all along there.

Hold down the Fn key then press the appropriate F key until you get the picture on screen. Sound needs a seperate cable.

The computer monitor is also a HD TV and I used a 15 pin VGA from the tower to the TV.

I tried the function key and absolutely nothing happens. Samsung said the VGA cable is all it should need for the TV's portion.

Now the video card mentioned is over my head, how can I check that? Remember to keep it simple for those no so technically minded. I am about ready to pull my hair out.

splitting signal

One computer guy here told me to check if I had to split the signal so the monitor and the TV both would receive the signal. Samsung told me initially the TV was not receiving the signal because of the computer. All I know the VGA port was open and I used it to connect to the TV. Does this mean anything to anyone?

You have a monitor and the TV hooked up? if so, then yes you need the dual output turned on, but I would bet you a dollar your cable is only 14 pin, and you need all 15 pins connected.
