Using two wireless routers?

My house is currently wired with cables to each individual room and to the cable modem and wireless router. However I have a large house and using a wireless connection my room creates for a pretty unreliable connection because it is so far from the router in the office. What i want to do is hook up a separate wireless router through the wired connection in my wall.

or is there some kind of wireless router extender? something I could plug into the connection in my room that would then allow the router to pick up wireless connections from the two souces?

whats my best option? thanks guys

I think there might be something along those lines but i am not overly sure so somebody else might be able to help

However if not I have had the same problems as yourself for nearly a year, the connection from my computer to the router has been horribly poor and unreliable.

Recently I upgraded to the new Wireless draft N by buying a netgear Rangemax router and the Netgear PCI (N) adaptor.

End result is I now sit here with a perfect connection at 270MBps

Just thought I would mention this as another option if your unable to get some sort of extender :)

that is a really good idea, and I have set up several multiple router networks for several of my clients and it works great.

I have posted on several threads on how to do this, but typically it requires some more powerful third party firmware to accomplish this.

So what exact type of router do you have? I suggest staying away from any Pre N device because the cost and fucntionality will not meet what you want to accomplish.

Bascially all you do is set up one router as the master DHCP server and set the other router to act as a repeater device, not too hard.

i have some POS netgear, pretty standard im going to assume. Whats a good upgrade to get? The distance between router and room is i'll guess close to 100ft with 3-4 walls in between. When they installed it the guys was damn surprised that i even got a connection in the first place. Is anything powerful enough to get me a perfectly reliable connection?

with the link you just gave me is this for using a single powerful router, or for what you mentioned in your previous thread to use multiple routers?

DD-WRT is third party open source firmware based on the same linux kernel found in cisco routers/switches. It basically turns your retail 50 dollar router into a 500 dollar router functionality wise. You will be able to configure multiple routers and wire them and have one act as a primary and the others as repeaters basically.

The firmware also allows you to boost wifi signal and even over clock the router's processor. However, I would suggest to just boost the wifi signal to about 70mW, anything higher than that can cause problems and over heat your router.

I have personally set up several of these type of set ups and its a great way to make a stable and secure network for your home with out paying top dollar for over priced devices.

You should check out their wiki page and their forum and then decide what to do.
