I currently have a home network between two computers, I am using an Ethernet crossover cable (no hub), I just got DSL, My computer only has one Ethernet jack, can I connect a hub to my computer and connect the DSL modem and the other computer to the hub, will that work?

It should work, thats how i got my GF's computer on Cable.

Internet from wall > Modem > Hub > Computer #1 & Computer #2

it would work assuming somewhere there you have a dhcp server or are statically assigning ip addresses. . . if your dsl modem is just a modem, and not a modem/router combo like a lot of Actiontec's then you might want to get a router instead of a hub. . .

alternatively, you can install another nic in one computer and do internet connection sharing. i have never done this, but i hear it works. i would just go with a router tho. . .

eww i wouldn;t do another NIC personally, sharing never appealed to me from 1 computer. It seems as if the "host" computer would get all the bandwidth and the "fed" computer would jsut get the left overs.

celsdogg seems to know more about this than me though, try what he said. i am only helpful with networking if i am RIGHT THERE, as it took me 3hrs+ to get Cable working at my GF's house on 2 machines...that was a mess lol.

It always works that way with the gf huh.. 3.5 minjutes to get iot working at home.. but 6+hrs with problems at the gf house... GAHH!

celsdogg is right. a hub will just provide a connection, however most ISP owned cable/dsl modems are set to give you 1 ip address to use. getting a router (hopefully one with a SPI firewall built in), will have the capability to dish out all the addresses you need, and will appear to the ISP as 1 computer only.

everyone has their own preference, i prefer linksys ;)

i have used belkin, netgear, and d link too, but by far i prefer the linksys.

and if your into it, there are a few homebrew firmwares for the linksys routers. they give extra features and some even increase signal strength!

i agree, thats why i would never do that! i just thought i would throw it out there, as a suggestion and all :D

Here’s what I want to do, I have a desktop, a DELL laptop, and I am going to have a HP laptop with Wireless LAN, I want to have internet and file sharing between all three computers, I want the desktop and the DELL laptop to be wired and the HP laptop to be wireless. Can any one recommend a specific Linksys Router?

well i have a belkin wireless router and works perfectly, i got mine from staples for like $30 or so.

I barrowed my friends hub, I hooked the DSL modem, comp A, and comp B to the hub and I can share files and printers and can access internet from the hub independent from any other comps on the network. I am going to get a laptop with wireless LAN and I am thinking about getting This Wireless Router

should work, just try and make sure that all your equipment (cards, routers, ect) are from the same company so you dont have any issues.

Oh, and happy b-day Holiday :D

i have a linksys WRT54G just like the one holiday is going to get, and i have file and print sharing setup like you want.

in all fairness, most any router will let you do that. the more important thing is to make sure that all your computer are in the same workgroup.

Oh, and happy b-day Holiday

THANKS, and I saw my friend today that I barrowed the hub from and he found out it was my b-day and he sad O today is your b-day,, well then the hub is a b-day
