Using desktop as a server

I was thinking of using my desktop like a hybrid server just so I can get into the drives form miine or my roomates laptops and so on, also file sharing would be nice can you suggest how I should do this any certain software to download that could help me out, I already have a wirless interned that I set up for all of my computers

Windows comes with everything you need, you just have to setup network drives and set permissions.

Run Control Panel>>Network Setup. Are you also wanting to setup a web server or just a network server?

just a network server don't see any need in the web server yet

if it were a web server i reccomend linux

I am runnig linux on one of my laptops and still just getting familiar with it
