I got this pc, which ended up on my desk fresh from a format.
All drivers installed but the onboard USB isn't working.
so i got myself a PCI USB hub, but same thing.
any ideas ?

i checked the BIOS and all but that was ok.... strange :(
the board is an Asus A8N-VM

USB is enabled in the bios you say?

checked if there is a usb driver/chipset driver available on the asus website? (sorry if this may seem stupid question... but its always the little/simple things you overlook,.. at least, I know I do.. :o )

nothing for USB but chipset driver i installed. No life

does it see the USB in the device manager? (just in case windows decided to disable it there or so, and if it doesnt see it there at all, you should check the BIOS again, since either its turned off, or its genuinely broken. :( )

Do you have back USB or frontal USB connectiviy. I ask because my front USB was not working for ages , I tried pluging it in to a different connection on the MB and nothing . Drove me crazy for a while .
My problem was :

I brought case from the market for 10 euro and swapped the usb board, using the Floppy disk slot as my new USB home.

im taking it your using xp. As Archangel said i would 1st check device manager for issues. even if it was showing ok and no error or exclamation mark you might want to delete the entry, reboot and let it re detect.

Only other thing is if you know the drivers are installed in the bios. My intel motherboard cd installation also installs software for xp. commands like autoupdate to see what is not installed. this is the kind of problems i always come back for help for. little stupid sheet that will stump ya for days......................then a simple brain fart! BAM....your back up and happy.

well.. where did you plug the hub into? (I mean, if you plugged it into the onboard usb, obviously its not gonna work. :)

yea.. wasnt really excpecting that of you anyways.. :P

To be honest, I dont think its a hardware issue. I think the USB protocols or something like that might be messed up on your pc.

that hub you mention, its a USB host controller, right?
