USB curious

Hey all, no problems here - not that I'll unburden on you right now - I'm just curious about something.

I brought in a USB cable (Mini-B on one end) to my wife so she could download some images from her Nikon camera. It wouldn't work. So I brought in another cable (same ends), and it worked. I tried the first one on my MP3 player, and it worked just fine. Why would one cable work with her camera and the other (which obviously works), not work with it?

It's not that I have nothing to do. I'm just trying to learn as much as possible about all things computers.

If you can answer this question, I thank you, and my curiosity thanks you.

We have different USB cables even though they look the same. One could've been a 2.0 and the other's not.

That wouldn't make any difference.

OP, sometimes USB cables are just picky.

Sure there is. We have a 1.x and a 2.x. I had the same problem with my Samsung camera. It won't work with the 1.x but worked with the 2.x.

We have no use for 1.xs anymore but they're still around.
