i have a stereo with a usb port. so i bought a usb audio cable and plugged it in. when i plug it in, the computer makes a sound as though a usb plug has been connected but installs nothing. the stereo does not play any sound and the music comes out of the laptop speakers... any ideas???

Do you mean you have a PC connected via the USB port?

The USB port on your stereo is most likely for a flash drive that contains audio files, I dont think it's designed to play audio via a PC.

I've seen a couple types of stereo's with USB. Some could read USB flash drives as Omega mentioned. I have also seen a couple that could stream audio from your computer using a basic USB cable. However, I have never seen one that could be used as an audio output... I'm nearly 100% sure they wouldn't take the time to implement such a feature as it would be much easier and cheaper to have a basic pre-amp output.

Edit

I re-read your post...so you are connecting directly to the device? I first assumed you were trying to use a USB to RCA converter :P If you are just using a basic USB cable, first double check what the USB port is actualy for. If you can confirm it's to stream data, look for drivers.

i used to stream audio straight from my computer to the stereo by way of a usb cable but for some strange reason it doesnt work anymore... its a jvc mx-gc5... i looked for drivers for it and came out empty handed... any other ideas???

I did a bit of research and that was the stereo I saw at Target. I tried to see what JVC's website had to offer, but their drivers/downloads page is pretty horrible... Plus, the term "Driver" is used quite often to refer to the speakers -.-

I'm sure the driver/software's out there somewhere, and I expect that's all you need...
