My friend recently told me to get a program called DriverScanner, by UniBlue. After running it, it told me to update my Realtek AC'97 Audio driver. I did thy and it was find all night. However now next day, the computer just freezes on the load up screen. I am using XP SP3, and the computer is an Compaq Presario.

Boot to safe mode and do a system restore or rollback the driver to previous driver. Those driver update programs are not worth it. The only driver you should worry about updating is your video card. Uninstall the driver update program.

Thankyou so much for answering, but when I try to rollback the driver as suggested it just keeps freezing.. I am off out now and will leave it for a few hours to see if it works. Will it say something to let me know it worked?

Ok I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but once again it does not work. And there is still not working. I did think that maybe it is not this anymore, but I have scanne for viruses many times and nothing is different from when last used it. I am thinking maybe a system restore is my only hope? But I sit have the discs I got with the PC, so do I send of for them? And thankyou for being such a great help.

You may not need a recovery CD in this case. Most pre-built machines have a recovery partition on the main hard drive. You can try entering into that recovery mode at startup. How to do this varies by manufacturer. You should see some sort of message telling you what key to press soon after you power on your machine, something along the lines of "Press F11 to enter recovery" as an example.

If you have deleted this recovery partition or it has become corrupted, then you will need to use the CDs provided by Compaq for system recovery.
