Unable to connect remote laptop to router

Have just installed a Netgear router and then went to connect two remote laptops to it.
First one connected with no problem. On the second one, after I hit the "connect" button, I got a dialog box that says: "Please wait while windows connects to Netgear network".
This goes on for a minute or so and then the box goes away without connecting laptop. I have the laptop sitting right next to the router and all the power bars are fully lit up, so I know it’s detecting the router. What am I doing wrong?

I know this sounds really a weird thing to say, but sometimes you can get strange results when the wireless card sits too close to the router. There's like a disruption in the signal with them being so close. I would recommend having a couple of meters distance if you can.

thanks for the response.
I actually started downstairs in the kitchen and then eventually came up to the computer room where the router is located and got the same results both ways

Are you trying to connect with Netgear's own software, or Windows itself? I have found in the past that there can be conflicts between Windows and third-party software. Have you tried it by both routes?

On the laptop I'm using Windows to try to connect the laptop to the Netgear router (start, Connect, etc).

I'm not real quick on this kind of stuff. How else would I do it?
