i just installed ubuntu and i just get a black screen (comand prompt) and how do you get past that to the actual ubuntu screen? or is that it?

what do you mean command prompt? You sure you installed it? What happens if you type in startx?

GRUB is the boot loader, how did you install the OS? Are you dual booting?

i made a cd and downloaded it. yes, i am dual booting.

Well it seems GRUB did not install right so it cannot select your partition correctly or something.

If you boot of the CD and try to repair it, and when it asks you to configure GRUB see if you can reinstall or repair it as well.
