can someone provide a link please.. I downloaded one but it won't start at start up.. I changed bios to cd start up.

okay well, ubuntu did load up for a sec then it just stopped with the _ symbol blinking on the top left corner i didnt feel the cd moving so i just forced shut down my laptop..

before this I tried my windows 7 disc and it loaded files fine but then it went to starting windows.. for some reason... and then it just froze as it started

Once you've downloaded it, if you either extract it, or mounting it with a virtual drive program, you can run the wubi installer, which makes it really easy to install ubuntu.

See, the problem is I am about to recieve my new computer wolfeking and johnny helped me with and well.. I didn't want to pay 100$ for windows 7, so I decided I would get it another way ;P, I downloaded windows 7 ultimate then i bought a cd key for really cheap.. but anyways..

I need it to be able to run off a blank hdd, I was sure linux could do that is 10.4 the better option? I will be downloading it now.

I was testing to see if my laptop could boot from either my win 7 disc or my linux but it seemed to freeze like I said, then again this is a HP laptop..going to test it on a another laptop later..

another question when I go to download ubuntu.. it says either download and try or download and install, which one should I burn on the disc? I have a feeling it doesn't matter but just to make sure..

Being an HP doesn't mean that it's not going to work. Once you create the linux disc and boot to it, it should give you the live boot option. I would go in there and then install it.

Try using a program called UNetBootIn. It basically downloads ubuntu and puts it on a flash drive, or if you have the .iso already select the second option and make sure to install to a flash drive! Not the main HDD! If you try (I have) it'll not allow you to install or give you fatal errors
