Typical Download Rate for BT Classic?

I've never used BitTorrent before. Downloaded the 4.0 classic client and started downloading a large bundle file (folder with 28 files 4.6 GB total). It's been about 4 hours since it started running, and it shows that my download rate has been in the 5~20 Kbps range while upload rate usually 2~3 times that.

It seems appalingly slow. If anyone here uses BitTorrent, can you tell me what the typical speed is? My internet connection is high speed DSL. Also I would appreciate any suggestion to improve the rate.

I've read a tutorial and FAQ from the official page but it only says to adjust the upper limit of upload rate and forward port if behind firewall.

A couple things you can do, 1, you could download another client like BitComet or BitLord, Then, change the port number to a random one. Like that guide said, change the upload limit to about 14, then the uploading speed wont overpower the download speed. The amount of peers and seeders also effect the speed, so look for ones with many peers.

i rarely hit 400kbps if it is fast i'll get a 200kbps combined from a running of 6bit simultaneously. it really depends on the torrent and amount of peers and seeds but it might be you port forwarding not tweak causing you to get that speed or your isp may not like you running bts.

14 kbps? But since download rate is proportional to upload rate, wouldn't the download rate be abysmally low? I was expecting to be able to download at much higher speed, say 100kbps and up, since BitTorrent has been so popular. Certainly with P2P program like IMesh I usually download multiple files @ around 150kbps.

Okay, I switched to BitComet now and have set the upper limit of global upload to 140kbps. Started downloading the 4.6 GB file (Episode 1-25 of Naruto anime). So far, download rate around 25kbps and upload rate around 35kpbs. Almost the same as before when I was using the classic 4.0 client.

Thanks for the help so far!
