Trying to network a Printer from Win98 to XP

'm trying to connect to a printer thats running XP, I'm running 98. On the XP PC (where the printer is) i enabled "share this printer", the printer name is "HP." the computer name is "KATHY1". In 98, when I go to add a network printer, i get an error message saying there's no printers on the network but I can print to another XP machine downstairs. When I enter the filepath name, I type: \\KATHY1\HP. (w/o the period)

It says the printer is offline, I installed the drivers. But then in the windows 98 printer screen it says "User Invention Required - Printer Offline." When i select from the drop down menu to uncheck printer offline, it says the network printer cannot be found.

Any suggestions? Would it be easier if i upgraded the 98 machine to XP?

Thanks,

Sean

Is the XP machine you're trying to print to connected to the network? Can your computer see that computer in the standard network neighborhood window? Your network path looks correct if this other XP machine is connected to the network properly. One final question, is this XP machine on when you are trying to print? If not, then it has to be...

BTW, it would not be adventageous at all to upgrade the 98 machine to XP, better to just get a new computer at that point... :)

On the win 98 machine under network neighborhood it says the network is down. I checked both machines (98 and XP) and they both have the same workgroup name. Yes, i made sure the XP machine and printer was on while trying to set up the network printer. The 98 machine connects only to one PC in the same workgroup name, but not another one. Does the windows firewall need to be off to have another PC connect to its printer?

On the XP computer i did select "sharing" for the printer, but it still won't connect. The only machine that I can connect to I can ping, but i cant ping the XP machine that I need to network the printer to. :-(
