Trying to get into BIOS

So my friend got an HP Mini 110 from his girlfriend's mom because it doesn't have an OS. When I turn it on, it says:

Reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key

I tried going into BIOS but its locked. I'm gonna have him email the guy that his girlfriend's mom got it from. But before this, I want to see if anyone has any ideas.

I can get into the boot menu, but only one device is there, the hard drive. I was hoping for a recovery partition, but there was none. There is a serial number for win 7 starter at the bottom

I googled around and all I came up with are a bunch of spam and BIOS password removal software, so I stayed away from that.

From what I can tell, I can't reset the CMOS without opening it up, which would be a last resort.

I'm going to try tomorrow to make a bootable USB drive with 7 since it doesn't have a disk drive and see if the boot menu recognizes it. I'm, of course, getting a legit serial number for it.

Does anyone have any ideas what to do? If there's no way to save it, then at least I can take it apart... :D

It gives two options, F9 for boot menu and F10 for setup. I can get into F9, the boot menu, but not F10, the BIOS.

I know what i would do but i will not say it as it's against forum rules. The problem you are having may not require you to reformat windows and just to reset to default settings in the umm....bluescreen with options you set. ;)

can make a live boot disk for ubuntu and i'm wondering if the guy grabbed the hdd and its os to keep or something, but you can check that stuff with it.

As said in my post, it has no disc drive, so I can't make a boot CD. And the boot menu showed the hard drive, so I really don't know what the guy did, but since I had class and work literally all day, I'm gonna try to boot 7 from a USB.
