trouble with proxy server settings

i have two machines connected using a crossover cable, both running XP Pro.

i have one machine set up for ICS with an ip address of 192.168.0.1

when using internet explorer i set the other machine to use an automatic configuration script and enter the address of the other machine and it works just fine. what i want to know is what can i do with other programs that dont have the "automatic configuration script" option? case in point:

i want to update my AVG Antivirus on the machine that does not have a direct connection to the internet, well it does, but the other machines connection is much faster..anyway

the only options under proxy server settings for AVG are "server" and "port"
i entered the IP address of the other machine for the "server" and tried port 80, that didnt work, tried 8080, that didnt work, left it blank, that didnt work..what am i doing wrong?

As long as you can ping the AVG server you shouldn't have to configure proxy settings. Setting IE for auto config is the same as not configuring it at all. I would try doing a pint 4.2.2.1 and if it replies you have a connection. Therefore, you should be able to leave AVG settings blank. If you are going to continue this setup I recommend a cheap $20 Cable/DSL router from your local electronics store. This is a way more stable and easier solution.
