Here it goes:
My PC has an onboard Intel 10/100 NIC. Everything was cool. I had it hooked up to my cable modem and everything was working very well. I decided that I wanted add an extra NIC to my PC in order to network with my other PC. Just 2 PCs. So I'm thinking, 2 NICs in one PC, 1 NIC in the other, crossover cable, set up XP as a gateway/Internet Connection Sharing thing, and Badabing. Everything should be peachy. Stuff is going really wrong, though. No matter what combination of ethernet adapters, one of them always shows the "Media Disconnected" message in ipconfig. What the crap? Can't get both of them to work at the same time. The Intel onboard was the one that said media disconnected. So, I even disabled the Intel in the BIOS and used two PCI cards in the PC. Still, one of them shows media disconnected. Now, you might be saying "bad cable or bad NIC" or something. Not true. I've tested them extensively in other situations. All of the cards by themselves are able to network through both the CAT5 connected to the cable modem and the CAT5 attached to the other PC. They just won't work at the same time. If I'm able to ping out to the net, I can't ping my other local machine, and vice versa. WTF man. I do not want to buy a hub/switch/router or anything. I would just like to solve this problem. This sucks.
