Trouble choosing a power supply

Hello all!

I've noticed my computer's been heating up recently, so I bought a CPU fan and it's still doing so. I then bought a new cooler for my GFX card and the motherboard temp had gone down alot but the CPU is still hotting up alot. I'm sure it has something to do with my power supply as it's quite a cheap one and really hots up.

My problem is that i'm not sure which one to buy. I am currently using an AGP card, and just normal ATA connectors and it's an ATX board. I want one in the region of 500watt as I have alot of music cards in there. Do power supplies that work for PC-ex still work with AGP?

Hope you guys can help ;)

Many thanks

Nope! That has nothing to do with your power supply. I would recommend getting a case fan, and if your still not satisfied, get a new/better HSF.

Your current problem is temperature not power related and yes a PCI-Express capable supply can run on most AGP boards depending on 20 or 24pin connectors used. The other difference with newer supplies is the addition of a new four 12x plug to feed the newer line of cpus. Post your make and model cpu. A good cpu chiller we can find for you.

I think i've a good enough new fan for my CPU. I'll stick with getting some case fans. How many would be good and where would be a good place to put them? Are you sure it's not the Power supply? It's just it gets really hot and my old power supply never used to.

Many thanks

With a cheap supply you could expect an unstabilty to see power drop offs causing sudden and even repeated system restarts. With a cpu staying hot with a good sink and fan inplace the next step would be to check the voltage settings in the bios to see if they are at default. If that was turned up the cpu would then see a larger power feed then needed. The other thing to mention here is a failing cpu drawing heavily on the supply seeing temps rise there.
The number of case fans will depend on size and mounting. If you grab two or three 120mm fans you will need space and maybe even an adapter for mounting on a 80mm opening. Plus you want intake in sync with exhaust to see the proper air circulation for the best cooling.
