Tricky Firewall Problem

So i've recently been downloading BitTorrent Files, from a BitTorrent Client called BitComet. I've been getting some pretty slow download speed anywhere between, 1kbps-50kbps.

So i looked up ways to speed up my downloads, and the solution i found was to mess with the ports and my firewall.

Recently, my McAfee Virus scan subscription ran out, so I don't have a software firewall. But when i went to the "Personal Firewall" option in the McAfee menus, it says that althouh i don't own Personal Firewall, that theres another firewall software running.

This computer is mine only, and I never installed any Firewall software. I also don't have the windows firewall installed, (never installed SP1 or SP2).

Anyone know how I can find out my firewall, and how to speed up my BitTorrent client once i do?

I'm on a wi-fi connection with a router, is it possible the router is a firewall?

Your host pc on a router would have a firewall provided by the ISP there. With XP even without the SPs 1+2 a firewall was included with the version. Check your security settings in the Control Panel to see if it is enabled. A good little free version is the Zone Alarm basic that flags anything trying to connect online. Unfortunately McAfee is on the crap list here for antivirus utilities. AVG 7.1 Free edition proves more worth there. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

As far as downloaders like BitTorrent types and others like LimeWire the download speed is an uncontrollable item since the server speed depends on how many are logged on at the same time. With a popular site you can expect to anything being downloaded ddddddrrrrrraaaaaagggg.... along very slowly at times. It took two full days to download Fedora one of the Linux distros off of a free server then. That was the download of four iso images at roughtly 600mb in size each.

Thank you, i'll give that a try.

Where are the security settings????

And a little help on finding out about the firewall would be awesome.

I havent been online in a few days, my apologies... IF you have a router you do have a firewall in place, and it is not put there by your ISP. You can remove it alltogether by placing your computer in the DMZ (not recommended). OR you can forward the ports you use for bit torrents. They should be listed in the options of your program. Do you need help logging into your router?

would have a firewall provided by the ISP there.

BTW, I havent heard of ANY ISP's hooking up a firewall for users.. you might be referring to the routers firewall...

Pm me if you need more help.

There is no firewall in Windows XP. It was only introduced in SP2.

You can open up ports in your router. That might be the problem. To log onto a Linksys router type 192.168.1.1 into your browser. The default password is admin. For a Dlink, type 192.168.0.1. I can not remember the l:p off the top of my head.
