Transporting desktop on plane?

I am planning to bring a desktop computer to an orphanage. I leave from the US and am going to South Africa. I have a few questions:

1. Carry-on or check-in? I would assume carry-on would be better, but will they allow computers as carry-on? If it helps, I am flying United and then South African Airways.

2. What about monitors? I am looking for a flat screen to bring, in order to take up less space/weight. Should that be carry on or check-in?

3. And, does anyone happen to know about computers going through customs?

Thanks!

1.I am certainly positive that United Airlines won't allow you to bring that as a carry-on. I think it would have to be a check-in.

2.Same deal with monitors. They will most likely put the two together as a "fragile" package. I'm not exactly sure about monitors but I think it would be the same deal as the computer.

3.Customs, you should be fine. I think its only if your mainly bringing in food. Its also mainly setup so that you don't smuggle illegal things like Cuban cigars, animals, etc. Other then that, you should be fine.

Carry on laptop will be the best you will do. It will be very expensive to check in with the luggage.
