Transfering files via a crossover cable

I connected my crossover cable to two computers, and it told me it was a 100 mbs connection, but that there was minimal or no connection becuase It couldnt obtain an IP. Now, i know it wont get an IP, cause there is no internet connection, just the two computers. I was able to view the shared files, and in the middle of transfering a large file, 160mb, it said it would take like 40 minutes, and it timed out in the middle, said it lost connection.

I was wondering if there is some way to resolve this "minimal" connection, and get use of the faster transfer rate of 100mbs for transfering my data.

Thanks.

Yes, Im using xp sp2. I have XP pro on the desktop, and XP home on the laptop. I ran the connection wizard, and can see the shared folders and access them, but it tells me I have limited connectivity. Do I need to configure TCP/IP and use the same gateway or something? Although, there is no internet involved.

TCP/IP wouls have to be enabled on the connection for sgharing to take place but im not sure if thats your problem. Right click on the connection and have a look through properties, its in there somwhere.

Thing is, I can share the files, I can see them on both computers, but there is limited connectivity for some reason. Any other thoughts on this crossover connection?

On a similar topic, the idea is to transfer large files from my pc laptop to pc desktop, but I dont think there is a way to connect a laptops h/d to a desktop is there (like use it as a second h/d)?

from what i can remeber, the limited or no connectivity is a bug in sp2. it will only disappear once the connections have shared internet, but from what i can tell, your not doing this. if this is the case, it will be fine for transferring files.

EDIT: when you say transferring files, how were you doing this. the easiest way to do this is to put it in your shared documents, then get the second computer to copy it to the main hdd on it.

Thats what I was doing. It still says "limited or no connectivity". I open up the shared folder on the computer, and attempt to copy the file to the desktop or folder, it starts copying for a minute or so, than it quits, and tells me the network path/name is no longer avaliable.

Okay, I found a guide to doing this crossover cable connection. It told me to manually set an IP for each computer 192.168.0.1 and .2, and a subnet mask was automaticly created. This seemed to have resolved the connection problem and worked for the first few files I copied. Now, a few hours later I am back to the same problem, the connections seem fine, but after copying files, its quits in the middle telling me something like the "the specified network name/path is no longer avaliable" ??

I found after starting my system it will let me copy like on file. After that I get that same error, "the specified network name is no longer avaliable". I tried to ping each computers IP and the first 2 pings failed, the last two pings of the address got a reply. Anyone know what this means? It seems like theres a connection, but its fading in and out.

You can use an adaptor to do this. I have one myself and works great but not sure where to get one from in the USA... heres a link to one in Australia if it helps. http://www.jaycar.com.au/productVie...&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=246

The only thing you may have to do is put the files you wanna copy, into a folder on the root directory of the laptop HDD and turn off the folder/file encription for it otherwise you will not be able to access it when it is connected as a slave on another PC.
