Tough one.. ( Industrial even )

Well... i just got a funny task over here.. i already got a LAN to PCI/PPI adapter to work over here,.. so i can make connection to a PLC in the field using a Ethernet port... but appearantly, that wasnt enough for the guy's over here... they decided i should try to take it 1 step further.. Wireless.

I have to use that cable to make the interface between the PLC and the Ethernet,.. but once ethernet, im free to do as i like.

so i was thinking of just hooking it up to a Remote WLan acces point ( you know,.. auch a thingy like the Apply Airport), and use the Wifi of the laptop to connect to it.

the interface cable is programmable, ( Subnet mask, IP adres). But my question is.. would it work with such a Remote acces point?

ok... i have a cable that goes into a pc directly,. i want to get the connection from that cable to the pc wireless tough, so i can move the laptop instead of beeing bound to that cable.

if you know a solution for it,.. please say so. its only used for programming and checking,.. its not used everyday or so,.. so it doesnt have to be an industrial casing.

ok im confused....

are you trying to do VoIP? and then wireless VoIP?

Also, that link you posted with that AP, wow way overly expensive. the only feature it has that a lot of consumer routers are capable of are the redundant power supplies.

What are you actually trying to accomplish here?

well.. we have PLC's ( programmable computers to control a machine... basicly.)
they are programmed with a laptop here,.. and we have a interface cable for it that goes via Ethernet to the laptop.
Not they want me to fix a way to put the ethernet plug of the cable into something wireless,.. and recieve that signal wich the Wifi adapter wich is in the laptop already.

i hope thats clear that way

what you would need is a wireless to ethernet bridge. If they already work over ethernet, you can bridge them over wireless, then set up a wireless router or AP to connecto to the rest of the network.

So, you could set up a device like this

http://www.macsense.com.au/aeropad_mini.htm

which does exactly what I described. You set these device up like you would a router. telnet into it via web browser, set your network settings, then connect it to your ethernet port and power it over usb (doesn't need to plug into a wall outlet) and then you have a ethernet to wireless bridge connecting to your network.
