I just got a 16 port netgear switch (fs116) off of ebay. I originally was planning on hooking up Wan-Switch-router. When I connected it that way the router doesn’t recognize the external ip. Than I tried Wan-router-switch and it worked for a little bit than it just took a crap on me. Some times I can connect through the switch for like 30 minutes but not able to do some online applications. After going through 5 bottles of bawls and staying up all night im stumped. Plz help

The switch might be crap.. but if it works and you want to connect WAN-switch-router you will have to turn off the DHCP on the router and plug in the cable from the switch into a lan port on the router..

Sorry if my noob questions are getting annoying but do I need a cross over cable to connect my wan to the switch? Or just a regular cat5?

You would use a crossover cable to connect two computers together. Use your "regular cat5" to connect to the switch.

ok thanks. I made a crossover already but it didt work. I also read that I need a router to connect the wan to the switch. But at a local internet cafe the guys has T1-switch-switch without a router

Now another problem has occurred. Me and my friends are going to have a LAN party tomorrow and we cannot connect to each others servers. They don’t show up on the list. And even creating dedicated server it doesn’t work. But we can connect to servers through the WAN when using the switch. PLZ help

If you're going to have a LAN party just use the switch alone, if it has enough ports. Each computer has to be assigned it's own IP manually, at least that's what I have to do most of the time.

To assign an IP:
Start>Control Panel>Network Connections>Local Area Connection>Properties>Internet Protocol>Properties.

1. Click "Use the following IP address" and make your system's IP address 192.168.1.10, make the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway 192.168.1.1
2. Now click "Use the following DNS server addresses. Make the preferred DNS server 192.168.1.1, do not fill in the alternate DNS server.
3. Close that window as well as the Local Area Connection window, your system is set-up.

To do this to the next system, Repeat all steps, but make the IP Address (step 1) 192.168.1.20

and for the next system 192.168.1.30 and so on.
