Hey guys, i;m usually prety good with computers, but now i really need some help. I just formatted my dads computer because he had a lot of viruses, and within a week he has a bunch of viruses again, and i cant really use it anymore. before connecting the internet, i installed AVG antivirus, and it seemed to be working fine, but as soon as i hooked up the internet the viruses started pouring in.
Last night, i finally formatted my computer and now i am having the same problem, I installed Panda antivirus before hookiing up the internet, and by the end of the night i had a bunch of viruses on mine too.
I dont no what is wrong
the only thing I can think is that I'm using a hub for the networking instead of a router.
could this be the reason i am getting so many viruses?
please help me, I make websites, and I am very busy, but i just cant get my computer to work.

WILL USING A ROUTER HELP STOP VIRUSES?
thanks
aman

Yes, a router will help, but it wont necesrily prvent viruses, it will however be a lot more secure than a plane hub.

In terms of cleaning your computer, doing a reformat will not necesarily clean everything off, especialy viruses. After doing a reformat or to do the reformat, try using some software called wipedrive (you can put this on cd and boot to it), which should do the trick, and theres various tools by the company 'seagate' you can use to analyze your hard driveverify that its cleaned. After that you can do fresh instalation of windows, get your virus protection installed, update it through live update before you use your browser (or download the updates on another computer and transfer them ovver). After you doo al that you should be all set.

1) you may have a MBR virus which formating wont fix, but using fdisk utility typing "Fdisk /mbr" will wipe out master boot record with a new good one. you must do this with a bootable floppy with fdisk command on it. also you fdisk before you format.

2) when ever you put on a new virus scan, the 1st web site you go to is updated for that virus utility or do automatic updates for it

3) get all windows updates and sp2 as soon as you install.

4) dl an anti spam spyware program tha twill run 24/7 like microsofts spyware prog, ccleaner, adaware se 6.0

5) make sure your virus utility has a good firewall or get one like norton 05 or trillion internet security 05...

this will help.

The first step here will clean any boot record virus. Let me say one thing though, you will be better off if you avoid the internet until you have installed ALL your protection. So, try to prepare a cd with all the updates so you can install them and avoid the internet.

How do you FDISK in windows xp? is it just fdisk at the command prompt? I haven't done fdisk for ages now since, win98 i think!!! Just normally do the format with with windows
