Thumb drives and car Stereos

I have a 2 gb Thumb drive and I was only able to put on 120 mp3 files before it gave me a Folder error. Through my searches I have found that is due to the small size of the files and the a limitation of the Root Directory.

Soooooo My question is, if I make a sub folder, and put the unlimited rest of the mp3 files, there, will the car stereo automatically read Sub directories or will they have to reside in the Root for the Car Stereo to see them?

thanks folks

That all depends on the limitations of the stereo. I suggest looking into your manual. I know the stereo in my Sonata can read about 200 songs off a CD. Maybe more, I usually don't keep track of how many I throw on a disk :P

I know with my JVC Arsenal head unit I can page between folders with an unlimited number of songs as long as there are no more than 999 songs in a folder.

I had one of the first generation Thumb drives on a car stereo and having multiple folders didn't work. Check your manual or just give it a try and see if it does. Doesn't hurt to try! :good:

I would just do it and try it, but I am in the military and I won't be home until tomorrow, at which time, we are loading up in the car and going on the trip, I want to use the Thumbdrive for.

I have my laptop and I have the thumbdrive, I do not have the car nor access to one with a USB port at this location. That is why I asked the question here.

I will be pressed for time when I get home and I want it to be copying to the thumbdrive as we load the car.

I am hoping that the Car stereo will scan all folders to search for the mp3 files and then play them.

I've been using a 40gb hard drive with my car stereo for years now, and I use individual folders, each housing an album.

Presumably, if your car stereo is designed to work with bigger storage device's, it will be happy with multiple folders. On an 8gb stick you might have thousands of songs, and it's unlikely the stereo makers would expect you to cycle through them one at a time.
